You might understand all the benefits of having an organized home, but it can be a lot more challenging if you are a naturally messy or disorganized person. There is nothing wrong with that, as everyone has different traits. But it doesn’t mean you have to live in a home of chaos and stress just because organizing doesn’t necessarily come naturally to you.

Here are some very easy steps to go through if you want to organize your home, regardless of how “messy” of a person you might be.

1-Start With the Trash and Recyclables

To make decluttering and organization simple, just start by throwing away anything that you no longer want, and recycling paper and plastic items you are getting rid of. This is a good place to start because a lot of clutter ends up being trash or something you no longer have a use for.

2-Find a Place for As Much as Possible

For organization, every single item you own should have a designated place. Think about your purse; every item in your purse probably remains in there most of the time. Your wallet, your keys, your lip balm, your makeup bag; most of these items likely belong in your purse, because that is where they go. Use this same concept for items in your home.

3-Create a Schedule for Cleaning and Organizing

If cleaning and organizing is not something that comes naturally to you, then what you need is a schedule. You need to find a time in your day or week when you can declutter and organize different areas of your home and office, written in your calendar just like any other appointment. This will depend on your schedule, but everyone has at least a few minutes a day or one day of the week with a bit more time.

4-Have Just One Area for Clutter

It’s okay if you don’t have a completely tidy home with the perfect, neat space for everything you own. If this is the case, just have one area reserved for clutter, preferably out of the way. This might be a junk drawer in your kitchen, one drawer in your desk that is used as a catch-all for mail and paperwork, or even a bin or box where you put random things that are kept in the closet.

The rule is that you only have one space or one compartment for clutter, and that’s it. If you are too lenient with yourself, you will go back to having a cluttered and messy home. You get one bin or one basket or one drawer that is kind of a catch-all for junk, and everything else needs to be organized and tidy.

5-Use Baskets, Bins, and Stackables

Start by collecting items that can be used for organization in your home. If you are on a budget, remember you can pick them out one at a time, and even find a lot of items at thrift stores, garage sales, and the dollar store. Choose items such as baskets to store your throw blankets in the living room, bins for knick-knacks and smaller items, stackables for mail, and magazines you have yet to go through and throw away.

6-Have a Nighttime Routine for Cleaning Up

Lastly, try to have a nighttime routine for cleaning up and decluttering the messy areas of your home. This is probably where you spend the most time in during the day, such as the kitchen or living room. Give yourself 10-15 minutes to do a quick clean and tidy up, and your home will stay so much cleaner with very minimal effort.

This is a good time for simple tidying up, like putting shoes away in closets or wherever they belong, putting kids’ backpacks back in the entryway, picking up towels off the bathroom floors, and clearing clutter from countertops.
